Kevin Durant is heading to Houston as a part of a blockbuster trade between the Rockets and Phoenix Suns. The news shocked the basketball world — including those on-hand in New York City at Fanatics Fest.

As it so happens, Durant himself was on stage at the event when the news broke. The expression on his face says it all.

“We’re gonna see,” he said on stage. “We’re gonna see what happens, man.”

The 15-time NBA All-Star is heading to Houston in return for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in this week’s 2025 NBA Draft, along with five second-round picks. One of those second-rounders includes the No. 59 overall selection in this year’s draft. Durant’s dealing to the Rockets will be official once the new league year begins on July 6.

Sunday’s massive trade comes on the same day as Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals. With Durant’s arrival in Houston, the Rockets will be looking to make a push for the championship series next season. This past year, the Rockets finished with the second-best record in the Western Conference but met an early exit in the first round of the playoffs against the Golden State Warriors.

Durant will turn 37 in September, but is still playing at an elite level. This past season he averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.

Before the news that Durant would be heading to Houston, it had been rumored all offseason that the Suns may be looking to move the star forward. Teams such as the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs were reportedly in the mix as preferred landing spots for the former Texas Longhorns star. The Minnesota Timberwolves were also in the mix.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Rockets and Heat emerged as frontrunners for Durant in the week leading up to the deal. It was largely hung up on both teams being unwilling to part with “young cornerstones.” For the Rockets, that was Jabari Smith Jr. and Reed Sheppard. For Miami, Kel’el Ware.

The Suns are now able to reload with a budding star in Jalen Green, and have three first-round picks and eight second-rounders that they’re able to trade with if they so chose over the next coming days. If they do so, it would likely be at, or before the 2025 NBA Draft, which is scheduled for two days inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 25 and 26.
