Minnesota Vikings sign DB Josh Metellus to contract extension

The Minnesota Vikings signed defensive back Josh Metellus to a contract extension as training camp gets into full swing. The team announced the deal Saturday.
The former Michigan standout was set to enter his sixth season with the franchise. Now, he’s here for the foreseeable future on a three-year, $36 million deal with the Vikings.
Metellus said he was blessed to have the ability to play at a high level. And for the former sixth round draft pick, he couldn’t envision another place to be.
“First off, thank the Lord,” Metellus said Saturday. “I mean these God given abilities, I wouldn’t be here without him. Shout out to Mark and Zygi. Since day one, you know, those guys have done whatever they can to help this organization move in the right direction … My wife, my kids, my mom, my family, the people who are in my circle, thank you for being here and helping me get to this moment. The city of Minnesota, I’m here, baby, I’m here. I love it here, and it’s great to be here to see you guys, and you know, to further this relationship, like I said, I genuinely love it here. And this, this place is home for me …
“The way I came up, the way I was brought up, you know, young kid from North Miami Beach, and to be here now, standing in front of you guys and showing that hard work through pays off. It’s special, and I’m just extremely grateful.”

Over the course of his career, Metellus has 283 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 16 pass deflections and four interceptions. He aided a resurgent Minnesota Vikings defense in 2024 and the team looks to get back to the postseason and make a deeper run this year.
At Michigan, Metellus was Second-Team All-Big Ten in 2018 and Third-Team in 2019. While he was a solid player for the Wolverines, he fell to the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Still, the Vikings saw the potential and selected him with the No. 205 overall pick.
As a member of the Class of 2016, Metellus was a three-star recruit out of Hollywood (Fla.) Charles W. Flanagan, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 92 overall prospect in the state, the No. 56 safety in the class and the No. 647 overall prospect in the class.
