New England Patriots claim former Giants QB Tommy DeVito off waivers

After having the opportunity to play for his hometown team for two seasons, the New York Giants cut quarterback Tommy DeVito going into the 2025 season. Now, he’s reportedly found a new home with the New England Patriots.
DeVito was claimed by the Patriots. There, he joins a team where Drake Maye is solidified as the starting quarterback and Joshua Dobbs is on the 53-man roster as a veteran backup. Notably, the Patriots also made a run at signing him in 2023, when he ultimately signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent, though that was under a different coaching staff.
In two seasons with the Giants, DeVito would be forced into action a few different times. In total, he’d make 12 appearances and started eight games during his time with the Giants. At times, there were even some flashes of his potential, which when attached to his hometown status in New York, made him a fan favorite.
Certainly, he was a character in New York. During the 2023 season, while still a rookie, he revealed that he still lives at home with his parents. His agent would also go viral on the sidelines, wearing ostentatious suits. That, coupled with his run of success, made for some memorable moments in 2023 when he earned the nickname “Tommy Cutlets.”

For his career, DeVito has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,358 yards and eight touchdowns to three interceptions. He’s also averaged 6.1 yards per pass attempt. Meanwhile, on the ground, DeVito has 227 career rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
This offseason, the New York Giants made an effort to completely revamp their quarterback room. That included drafting Jaxson Dart in the first round of the NFL Draft while bringing in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston as veteran options. That made Tommy DeVito the odd man out on their roster when it came time to make cuts.
The New England Patriots are coming off a 4-13 season and are going into just their second season in the post-Bill Belichick era. Now, they will be coached by Mike Vrabel, who is the second former Patriots linebacker to take over as head coach in New England in as many seasons. He had previously been the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, where he found success. Now, the hope is he can spark New England and hit the ground running in the 2025 season.
