Before the start of the 2022 NFL season, the team over at NFL.com is handing out some hardware. Recently they comprised a list of its most valuable players around the league, non-quarterback edition. NFL.com has selected New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore as their non-quarterback MVP.

” While there are health and availability concerns on the offensive side of the ball in New Orleans, there is no question Lattimore sits in the crème-de-la-crème class of NFL corners. With the additions of Tyrann Mathieu and Marcus Maye to help smooth over the losses of safeties Marcus Williams and Malcolm Jenkins, the Saints’ D should remain stingy. But Lattimore’s still the key to New Orleans continuing to be one of the best pass defenses in the NFL. A bully at the point of attack, the corner leads the NFL with 74 passes defensed since 2017. Turn some of the PDs into INTs, and Lattimore could put up head-turning stats in a pass-happy league.”

Lattimore has been a headache for primer wide receivers in the NFL since the Saints selected him in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In fact, he had one of the most productive rookie campaigns by a cornerback in the modern NFL era. Lattimore finished that year with 18 passes defended, five interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovered, and a defensive touchdown, and ended the year as the defensive rookie of the year and a pro-bowler. Since then, he has been a pro-bowler in three of the last four seasons.

The former Ohio State Buckeye has been a consistent elite-level defender for New Orleans since day one. And because of that, he is undoubtedly worthy of his team’s non-quarterback MVP recognition.
