Noted NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper believes there is no good reason for the Bears to choose anyone but Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick.

In fact, Kiper was adamant, although it’s not clear who is suggesting that Chicago do otherwise. And as Kiper likes to do when he talks about the NFL Draft, he talks about specific stats.

“I know there’s about a million mocks out there these days but in terms of Caleb Williams, I think you look at the 120 touchdowns over the last three years,” Kiper said on air. “Going back to Oklahoma when he took over for (Spencer) Rattler in that Texas game, he was lights out, okay? Twenty-seven rushing touchdowns over the last three years. Guess what? That’s equal to Jayden Daniels, who was considered the Lamar Jackson of this draft.”

Kiper continued: “So, Caleb Williams played with a bad offensive line, no (receiver) Jordan Addison this past year, he was phenomenal in 2022. And think about Ryan Poles the (Bears) GM. When he was director of college scouting with the Kansas City Chiefs not that long ago, he was responsible as well, with others, for the drafting of Patrick Mahomes. So, Caleb Williams … 100 percent, he’s got to be the Chicago Bears’ pick at number one overall.”

NFL Draft drama could be the order of the quarterbacks

Williams transferred from Oklahoma to USC for the 2022 season, following his coach, Lincoln Riley, from Norman to Los Angeles. He won the Heisman that December. Basically, since then he’s been the favorite to go No. 1 in this NFL Draft, which happens to be quarterback-heavy. It didn’t matter that the Trojans had a mediocre season.

The top four choices of the NFL Draft could be quarterbacks coming from a group of Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy. Williams should be No. 1. The drama starts once the Commanders are on the clock and deciding between Daniels and Maye. The consensus seems to be Washington picking Daniels. The Patriots likely would take who the Commanders didn’t draft.

Then, the draft could see teams trading up to No. 4 with the Cardinals to take McCarthy, who led Michigan to the national title.

Williams might be the most anti-climatic choice of the draft. Stick with On3 for your NFL Draft coverage by clicking here.
