The NFL has fined the Baltimore Ravens $100,000 for violating the league’s injury report policy by incorrectly listing quarterback Lamar Jackson as a full participant on last Friday’s practice participation report, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The hefty fine comes after Jackson returned from a three-game absence with a hamstring injury to throw four touchdowns in the Ravens’ 28-6 win over the Miami Dolphins.

The Ravens released a statement shortly after Schefter’s news acknowledging the team “clearly made an error regarding player injury reporting and cooperated transparently with the league’s investigation” and will not appeal the NFL’s fine.

The issue arose after the Ravens retroactively changed Jackson’s status from “full participant” to “limited” in last Friday’s practice report. That was after it was determined the former NFL MVP only worked with the scout team and did not take any first-team reps.

“It really is an honest mistake,” Harbaugh said after the Ravens had a 30-16 victory Sunday over the Bears, per ESPN. “I can tell you this: Nobody’s trying to hide anything. There’s no advantage to be gained with that.”

John Harbaugh discusses Lamar Jackson’s practice participation error

Harbaugh then said he was not involved in designating the practice participation levels for Ravens players. The coach said that the decision was made by the public relations staff and athletic trainers.

“I think, in their defense, he practiced a full practice,” Harbaugh said. “I think they felt like, because he did the same number of reps [as he usually does], it was a full practice. But when you dig in and you read the rule, at the end of the day, it wasn’t right. So, that’s what it was. That’s why, as soon as we found out, we changed it.”

It’s possible the NFL could punish the Ravens for the error.

“John Harbaugh, the coach of the team, told reporters after the game it was an honest mistake. But that still sets the Ravens up for some sort of a sanction,” Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said on NBC’s Football Night in America. “The question is, when the league looks into this, will they determine there was some sort of an effort to conceal his true status by saying he fully participated? Maybe the Bears would think he’s going to play.”
