Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II could be out of the lineup for a long time due to a pectoral injury. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Surtain’s injury will likely keep him out of action for four to six weeks.

Schultz said no surgery is needed, but he was told that Surtain will get a second opinion this week to confirm exactly how much time he will miss. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year suffered the injury during the Broncos’ 44-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

With 22 seconds remaining in the first half, Patrick Surtain II tackled Cowboys WR George Pickens. During the tackle, Surtain twisted his left arm and shoulder, and he was in pain as he walked to the locker room at halftime. It was the second injury the former Alabama star suffered on Sunday, as he left the game earlier because of a lower right leg injury.

Surtain came into this season looking to build on a productive 2024 campaign. The 25-year-old recorded 45 tackles, four interceptions, 11 passes defended, and one defensive touchdown last year. In eight games this season, Surtain has tallied 27 tackles and nine passes defended.

Patrick Surtain II reveals his goals for the 2025 season

In June, Surtain talked about his goals for the 2025 season. “There’s always something out there to do better,” Surtain said, per the Broncos’ official website. “Why not get another one? Why not get more All-Pros? … But I think the main goal is to win the Super Bowl, at the end of the day. That’s why I play the game, is to win. I think that’s the end goal for me.”

When Surtain was named Defensive Player of the Year, he became the second Bronco to win the award. Randy Gradishar earned the honor following the 1978 season, and he reacted to Surtain joining the club.

“We needed another Bronco to come on the show and say, ‘I’m the Defensive Player of the Year,'” Gradishar said in February. “All credit goes to him, because of the year he’s had and how he’s played. He’s just a really great athlete, and he just reminds me of a guy when I played, Louis Wright. The way he covered passes, the way he covered the run — they didn’t come his way very often. Having the opportunity to have that award is certainly a great honor.”
