NBA champion and Basketball Hall of Famer Paul Pierce is facing two criminal charges stemming from his arrest earlier this month in Los Angeles, per TMZ Sports. Pierce has reportedly been charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving with .08% blood alcohol content.

Pierce, 48, was taken into custody 14 days ago on suspicion of DUI. He allegedly fell asleep at the wheel of his Range Rover SUV Oct. 7 while in traffic on a Los Angeles freeway. Pierce was approached for questioning by the officers, who claimed he showed signs of alcohol impairment. TMZ reported that Pierce is due in court for arraignment next month.

Two days after the incident, Pierce took to social media. He denied that he had been drinking and driving.

“Imagine being stuck in stand still traffic for 45 mins and falling asleep,” Pierce wrote on Threads. “I took this picture that night because I never been in stand still traffic for this long. I’m old, I’m tired, and I fell asleep. I’m good y’all thanks for the love.”

Paul Pierce in trouble with the law

Pierce played 19 seasons in the NBA. He spent the first 15 with the Boston Celtics, where he became one of the best players in the franchise’s storied history. Pierce, a 10-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA selection, was named 2008 Finals MVP after Boston’s six-game series victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. He finished his career with averages of 19.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Pierce was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021.

Upon retirement, Pierce became an analyst. He joined ESPN in 2017 and was fired four years later after he streamed himself live on Instagram drinking alcohol and smoking what appeared to be marijuana.

He made his return to TV in March 2024 when FOX Sports hired him as a contributor for the show “Undisputed.” After Undisputed was discontinued in August 2024, Pierce moved to the show “Speak.” FOX Sports canceled speak in July 2025, and Pierce was let go from the network.
