Peyton Manning, Jared Goff call for tipped interceptions to not count against quarterbacks

When a quarterback throws a pass and it ends up in the hands of a defender, it goes down in the books as an interception. Peyton Manning and Jared Goff would like to see that change in a very specific situation.

Not all interceptions are the same. Sometimes, quarterbacks throw the perfect pass only for the football to go off the hands of their intended receiver, pop up into the air and fall into the possession of a defender. But still, it gets counted as an interception against the quarterback.

We saw it during Monday’s Week 8 Monday Night Football Game between the Kansas City Chiefs (4-3) and the Washington Commanders (3-4). Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes hit tight end Travis Kelce square in the hands with a pass. Kelce couldn’t come down with it, the ball went into the air and landed into the hands of Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Manning, the Hall of Fame quarterback, and Goff, the Detroit Lions (5-2) signal-caller, both agreed: that shouldn’t count as an interception against Mahomes.

Peyton Manning can’t believe what he’s watching on MNF

Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota fell victim to the same thing earlier in the game. His screen pass intended for wide receiver Deebo Samuel went off his hands, and it was picked off by Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna. Manning criticized Samuel for the mistake.

“You are kidding me. That can’t happen,” Manning said. “Another wide receiver screen. I like it, get it out of your hand. It’s just — Deebo. It went off his hands, to his facemask and right to the defender. … Took his eyes off of it.”

It was a sloppy first half at Arrowhead, both teams turning it over. They are tied 7-7 with 30 minutes to play.
