The Super Bowl is getting ready to make its return to Atlanta in three years. According to the Sports Business Journal, the NFL is expected to award Super Bowl LXII in 2028 to Atlanta when owners meet next month in the city. This will be the second time in nine years the Super Bowl will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of the Atlanta Falcons.

Arthur Blank, the owner of the Falcons, has been public about hosting another Super Bowl after last hosting in 2019. By 2028, Atlanta will have three major hotels and Centennial Yards mixed-use development completed near the stadium. None of those were present in 2019.

The first time Atlanta hosted the Super Bowl was in 1994, a game that featured the Dallas Cowboys taking down the Buffalo Bills 30-13. The NFL championship game returned to Atlanta in 2000, and fans saw the St. Louis Rams (now Los Angeles Rams) get past the Tennessee Titans 23-16. 2019 was when Atlanta hosted the Super Bowl for the third time, and that was a game that featured Tom Brady and the New England Patriots beating the Rams 13-3, the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in history.

Atlanta is known for hosting big sports events over the years. In January, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be the home of the College Football Playoff Championship game. The stadium also hosts the SEC Football Championship and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl every year. In 2026, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host multiple World Cup matches including one of the semifinal contests. And in 2031, Atlanta will host the NCAA Men’s Final Four.

Back in 2021, Blank talked about his desire to host the 2028 Super Bowl. “We definitely want to be back in the rotation,” Blank said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The next game that is open in 2028. So, we’ll be putting our hat in the ring for that.”

And when it comes to the Super Bowl in 2019, Blank said, “I think Atlanta did a great job with the Super Bowl. The fact that everything was downtown and walkable. It’s a magnificent stadium that is still rated No. 1 in the NFL for fan experience. You know, I think there are a lot of reasons that we should be considered, but we’ll see.”

The upcoming Super Bowl will be played in New Orleans. The big game will then be played in Santa Clara (2026) and Los Angeles (2027). When the game is played in New Orleans, it will be tied with Miami for the Super Bowls with 11.
