Steelers OC Arthur Smith addresses how he'll utilize new weapons Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is expecting the offense to change in a big way with the additions of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver DK Metcalf. While speaking to reporters on Wednesday Smith talked about Rodgers and Smith will be expected to make the Steelers’ offense explosive.
“Obviously, we didn’t bring Aaron in here and sign DK for all that money to go run the wishbone,” Smith joked on Wednesday, via Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (per Pro Football Talk). “You try to play to the strengths of your team.”
The Steelers have their minicamp this week, and it gives Arthur Smith a chance to see Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and the rest of the personnel before making changes ahead of training camp. “Every year will be different,” Smith said. “You evolve with who you have personnel-wise, and strategically there are things you want to evolve to. A lot of times that’s how rosters are made — offseason acquisitions, free agency, the draft. I’ve had a lot of different quarterbacks with a lot of different skill sets. Your job as a coach is to play to the strengths of your players. You adapt to the personnel you have.”
Rodgers signed a one-year contract with the Steelers last week. While Smith and Rodgers are learning about each other on the football field, the two are very familiar with each other.

Arthur Smith shares more on Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf
“I’ve got to know Aaron outside of football the last couple of years,” Smith said, per the Steelers’ official website. “You’re talking about one of the all-time great quarterbacks and of the things he’s accomplished in this league. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know him as a player, the relationship with the football stuff. Just really excited to have him here. It’s going to be a fun journey. I know we’re only a couple days in, but he’s been awesome.”
In March, the Steelers acquired Metcalf via trade with the Seattle Seahawks. He then agreed to a five-year $150 million contract extension with Pittsburgh. When Metcalf joined the Steelers, Smith said he spoke to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown about him since the two were teammates at Ole Miss.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people, just as Aaron probably talked to a lot of people too,” Smith said. “It’s pretty normal with any player you’ve had. Same thing with DK. I had AJ Brown. They’re good buddies and college teammates. And he’d done his homework. I’d done my homework. That’s why you need to do it on the front end when you’re studying the draft and know the league. Take opinions from everybody.”
