Washington Commanders to release quarterback Sam Hartman
The Washington Commanders are releasing quarterback Sam Hartman ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline, per NFL Insider Ian Rapoport. He is expected to return to Washington’s practice squad if he clears waivers.
Hartman completed 25/46 passes for 207 yards, zero touchdowns and four interceptions in three preseason games. The Commanders now boast three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster; starter Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota and Josh Johnson.
Hartman was a three-star recruit coming out of Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, SC) in the Class of 2018, where he was tabbed the No. 775-ranked player in the country. He committed to Wake Forest, where he’d play from 2018-2022. As a Demon Deacon, he passed for 12,967 yards, 110 touchdowns and 41 interceptions in 48 career games.
Following the 2022 season however, Hartman transferred to Notre Dame for his final season of college football in 2023. In South Bend, Hartman completed 59.1% of his passes for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Fighting Irish went 10-3 and dominated Oregon State in the Sun Bowl, sending Hartman off into the sunset.

He went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, but quickly latched on with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent. Since originally signing with Washington, he has since been waived, assigned to the practice squad, elevated to the active roster, released, sent back to the practice squad, signed to a reserve/futures contract, waived and now likely will be sent back to the practice squad.
The Commanders have high hopes for the 2025 season. After going to the NFC Championship Game last year, the Commanders want to take another leap forward. That’s going to rely on Jayden Daniels at quarterback living up to his potential. Of course, with an injury, Washington can’t afford for the season to go sideways, and that’s when they’ll need those backup quarterbacks to step up.
