In November, Trey Wimbley of Central (S.C.) DW Daniel reclassified from the 2028 class to 2027. That same day, Clemson extended an offer. Two weeks later, the Tigers landed his commitment.

Wimbley, a four-star prospect and the No. 9 player in South Carolina, committed to a school and a coach that he knows well.

His ties to Clemson run deep.

Prince Wimbley, Trey’s father, was teammates with Dabo Swinney on Alabama’s 1992 national championship team. The 2027 playmaker has been attending camps at Clemson since middle school. When the family moved to the Upstate, Prince joined Swinney’s All-In Foundation, and Clemson became even more familiar.

By the time the offer came, it hit different.

Wimbley had 12 offers, but Clemson stood out for reasons beyond football.

“I grew up an Alabama fan and used to dream about going to Bama because my dad played there,” Wimbley told Rivals. “We used to go to Alabama games all the time, but I’ve been coming to Clemson camps since I was in the 6th grade and I just fell in love with how they do things.

“Clemson has always been a school that I dreamed to go to, so when they offered me it meant a lot because they do everything the right way at Clemson.”

His relationship with Swinney carried weight.

“It did play a part in my decision because I know what type of person Coach Swinney is, and I couldn’t ask for a better coach.

“What makes Coach Swinney special is that he is a man of God and he is not afraid to put that out there. He truly believes in developing his guys and getting them prepared for life. He is the winningest football coach in ACC history.”

There was more to Wimbley’s commitment than playing for Coach Swinney.

“I love the culture, how it feels like home, the way they win, and their nearly 100% graduation rate is very important.”

Wimbley has been on campus countless times, attending every Clemson home game this season and last.

“I’ve been to Clemson a lot,” he said. “They have a culture of winning and doing things the right way. It’s like family when I go there. They care a lot about character development and they have very strong traditions.”

The decision is early. This time next year, he will put pen to paper and he might do so in orange ink.

“I’m all in,” Wimbley said. “I know it’s early, but I know what I want and Clemson has everything I’m looking for.”
