Less than a week after Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell was hired by Penn State, one of the Cyclones’ top commits has backed off his pledge.

Four-star Grinnell (Iowa) offensive lineman Will Slagle announced Tuesday he is reopening his recruitment.

“After a lot of prayer and heartfelt conversations with my parents, coaches, and closest friends, I’ve made the tough decision to decommit from Iowa State,” he wrote on Twitter. “This was not easy as I have so much respect for the program and the fan base there. I want to give a special thank you to Coach Matt Campbell and Coach Ryan Clanton for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be a Cyclone. I truly believe God is opening new doors for me, and I’m trusting His plan for my future. I also want to thank my family and friends for always supporting me through this journey. Iowa State is still a school I’m considering, and I look forward to taking some time to get to know Coach Jimmy Rogers and the new coaching staff before making my final decision. With that being said I will be fully reopening my recruitment. Thank you again Cyclone Nation.”

Slagle had been committed to the Cyclones for less than a month, giving his verbal pledge to Campbell and Co. on November 22.

The 6-foot-4, 280-pounder was the only commitment of the 2027 class for Iowa State, which has since replaced Campbell with former Washington State coach Jimmy Rogers.

ISU will be still be in the mix going forward, but the Nittany Lions are considered a strong contender to land Slagle’s eventual commitment.

Slagle is the No. 317 overall prospect in the cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services. He also ranks as the nation’s No. 20 interior offensive lineman and the No. 3 recruit in Iowa.
