5-star QB Ryder Lyons sets commitment date

Five-star Folsom (Calif.) quarterback Ryder Lyons is ready to announce his college commitment.

On Wednesday night, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett that he will make his decision public on Tuesday, June 24. Lyons hasn’t officially named his top schools, but has largely been focused on Oregon and BYU in recent weeks.

He took an official visit to Eugene this past weekend after previously canceling a trip to USC. And this weekend, he will be at BYU — his final trip before decision day.

In a video announcing his commitment date, Ole Miss, USC and Ohio State were also featured but are consider major longshots to land him.

Oregon, BYU battling for Lyons

Instead, he’s been a top priority for the Ducks since the Trojans flipped four-star commit Jonas Williams away from them in February.

“Coach Stein, Coach Lanning, how they’re doing as a program, they’re just building and building,” Lyons told On3’s Steve Wiltfong this spring of what makes the Ducks a contender. “Me and Coach Stein have a great relationship, probably the best out of any other coaches. They’ve been recruiting me the hardest probably, the whole time … how they’re recruiting, a lot of people like to say it’s all Phil Knight money, but they don’t really understand how good they recruit … their culture is probably one of the best I’ve seen. How they play as a team, how they interact with each other.”

The Cougars though, have strong family ties for Lyons. His father, Tim Lyons, played football there, he has siblings who have gone to school there and is also a member of the Church of Latter Day-Saints. But BYU’s success last season has caught his attention as well.

“I just want to win, so seeing what they did last season, seeing how they played and knowing the trajectory of the program did a lot for me,” he told On3’s Chad Simmons. “I am a competitor. Having a chance to win is something very important to me. They were right there last season, they won a lot of games and it looks like they can build on that. That was big for me to see.”

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder is the No. 17 overall prospect in the 2026 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks as the nation’s No. 5 quarterback and the No. 3 recruit in California.
