Michigan star freshman QB Bryce Underwood celebrates Wolverines landing 5-star RB

There have been few bigger recruiting wins in recent memory for Michigan’s football program than flipping Bryce Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 recruit, at the end of the 2025 cycle. His decision jumpstarted a commitment run that ended with the Wolverines holding the No. 6 class nationally and has carried over into the 2026 class as well.
Recruits love the prospect of playing with Underwood, and he has been an active recruiter for Moore and Co. Those dividends paid off on Tuesday, as Michigan beat out Tennessee, Georgia and Ohio State for five-star running back Savion Hiter.
The two elite prospects have been in contact during Hiter’s recruitment, including on his official visit to Ann Arbor. They took a photo together with Underwood handing the ball off to Hiter in a Michigan uniform, and it looks like that will come to fruition on the field next year.
After Hiter announced his decision Tuesday morning, Underwood posted on Instagram: “It’s one nine Birthday, you shoulda knew,” with the running back’s decision coming on Underwood’s 18th birthday.
The 5’11, 205-pound Hiter becomes the fourth five-star commitment for Michigan during Moore’s tenure. He joins Underwood, as well as 2026 five-star pledge Carter Meadows and 2025 five-star signee Andrew Babalola.

And like Underwood, he could be an immediate impact player — and potentially a starter — next year as a true freshman.
“You can build the offense around him alongside Bryce Underwood,” Charles Power, Rivals’ Director of Scouting and Rankings, told TheWolverine.com. “I suspect he’ll be able to come in and play as a true freshman. Running back is a position where you can make an impact early on. I’d expect early returns from Savion Hiter. He’ll take a big step up in competition, but he’s primed to make an impact early on. Obviously, he’s a huge recruiting win. He projects well in the Big Ten. You look at what Michigan likes to do offensively, historically, and Hiter fits in really well with that. He’s a massive get for Michigan. He has the potential to be a foundational building block for Sherrone Moore and the offense the next few years.”
As a junior, Hiter was an All-State selection and helped Louisa County (Va.) go 9-3 and reach regional semifinals of Virginia’s Class 5A playoffs. He carried 156 times for 1,698 yards (10.8 YPC) and 26 touchdowns, while add another 199 yards receiving. Defensively, he was credited with 56 tackles, 7 sacks and an interception.
