In-state ATH Javonte Smith commits to the Vols: 'It is just a different atmosphere at Tennessee'

Jackson (Tenn.) Northside athlete Javonte Smith has committed to the Tennessee Volunteers. The 6-foot, 175-pounder had close to 20 offers and he committed to the in-state program over Arkansas and others.
“The tradition at Tennessee, the coaches and how I feel around the campus were the biggest things that put Tennessee on top for me,” Smith told Rivals.
The Vols first offered Smith as a wide receiver when he was a sophomore, but that shifted to defense over time. He is a versatile athlete, and he is committing to play cornerback in Tim Banks‘ defense for coach Willie Martinez. The two got to know each other well over the last few months.
“Coach Martinez is a real person. He seems genuine. I really like his energy too.”
Smith feels the same about head coach Josh Heupel and he is excited about his future as a Vol inside Neyland Stadium.

“I made my mind up after the official visit,” Smith said. “I have been there five times and it is just a different atmosphere at Tennessee. When the stadium is lit up and the crowd is chanting, it is something you cannot forget.
“At Tennessee, it is a good, healthy and rich environment. I am committed and my recruitment is shut down.”
