Julian Sayin joins long line of talented passers from SoCal region
Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Sam Darnold and Jayden Daniels are just a few of the recent success stories at the quarterback position to have come from Southern California.
On Saturday night, Ohio State’s Julian Sayin has a chance to etch his name with the elite group of signal callers to have recently played their high school football out of the Southern California region. Two out of the aforementioned four passers ended up winning the Heisman Trophy, the very honor Sayin has himself in position to win this weekend.
Sayin began his legend playing his high school football at Carlsbad High School, with the quarterback putting up some stellar numbers in the process. At Carlsbad, Sayin in his senior year won the prestigious Gatorade California Player of the Year, throwing for 2,369 yards, 24 touchdowns to just one mere interception.
Throughout the course of his high school playing days with the Lancers, Sayin threw for nearly 8,000 yards and 86 touchdowns. The quarterback has continued his growing legend at Ohio State, where he’s proven himself as one of college football’s top quarterbacks.

“Julian Sayin is one of the more developed and technically-advanced 2024 quarterbacks at this stage,” Rivals Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power said in 2022 of Sayin. “The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder does not play like a sophomore at Carlsbad (Calif.) High. Sayin was among the more productive and efficient top 2024 signal callers last fall, completing 71.5 percent of his passes for 2,769 yards, 34 touchdowns and five interceptions at nearly 11 yards per attempt. He’s accurate and has shown a good feel for the passing game. It remains to be seen if Sayin’s ceiling is as high as some others, but he’s already proven to be a very good player at the high school level.”
Sayin this season for the Buckeyes has thrown for 3,323 yards and 31 touchdowns, with the opportunity Saturday evening to possibly hear his name being called up to the podium. The passer is just latest one to have come from SoCal and could be well on his way to getting into the NFL.
