According to a report by HighSchoolOT, the all-time wins leader of a North Carolina high school football team has decided to step down due to health reasons.

Per the report, South Granville High School’s Mike Hobgood announced his resignation as the program’s head football coach due to a heart-related health issue. Hobgood had won 133 games as the Vikings’ lead man and served as the head coach at South Granville in two separate stints from 2005-2013 and 2016-2025.

Below is the announcement by Hobgood, per the report by HighSchoolOT:

“Due to heart-related health issues, I am resigning as Head Football Coach at South Granville. This is not when I planned to leave, but I don’t know if there was ever a time I would have wanted to step away.

“God has been so good to me, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to coach. Above all, I thank Him for sending His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. I’ve won some games and lost many, but I know I’ve won the ultimate prize as a believer in Jesus.

“I am immensely grateful to my family for their sacrifices, which allowed me the time to coach. My wife is the best person I know, and she comes by it honestly as her mom and dad are great people. I especially want to thank my parents, who have supported me from the beginning of my playing and coaching career. They are truly exceptional. A special thank you to my older brother, who shaped and challenged me in ways only younger brothers can understand.

“Finally, to all the players I’ve coached and the coaches I’ve worked alongside, it’s been an incredible journey. Together, we worked tirelessly to build something special at a place with many challenges. I will always cherish those moments. I look forward to catching up with you again, now that I have a little more time.”

Through six games this season, the Vikings are 2-4 on the 2025 campaign and are coming off a a pair of 48-0 wins over Cedar Ridge and Carrboro, respectively. The two wins came after South Granville started the season at 0-4.

Next up for South Granville (2-4) is a matchup against Seaforth on the road Friday night.
