Four-star edge Tobi Haastrup commits to Oregon

Houston (Texas) Mayde Creek On3 Industry four-star edge rusher Tobi Haastrup has committed to Oregon.

The touted defensive end who’s only played football for one season and is now locked in with the No. 1 ranked program in the country.

“It’s definitely a blessing,” Haastrup told On3.

Haastrup was born in London, moved to the United States when he was nine and ultimately landed in the Lone Star State where football is king. Haastrup however ran track, excelling in the 100m dash and shot put till a football coach who helps with the track team convinced him to come out on the gridiron for his senior year.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Haastrup didn’t know the rules, but the physical superior prospect quickly excelled coming off the edge with his unique combination of athleticism, power and tenacity.

Making play after play behind the line of scrimmage, Haastrup quickly caught the eye of college recruiters and ultimately racked up 30 scholarship offers. He took trips this fall to LSU, Texas A&M, Boston College, Texas Tech, Florida State, Missouri, USC and Oregon. The decision came down to the Tigers, Trojans and Ducks.

Mizzou had his attention for awhile but in the end he’s locked in with head coach Dan Lanning and his staff. Oregon got the last visit this past weekend.

“To be honest just the connection,” Haastrup said. “I really feel in my heart I’m wanted in that place and everything they have lined up for me in terms of being a player and being my best and the fact the head coach is a defensive guy. The DC (Tosh Lupoi) is the outside linebackers coach. I’m pretty sure the head coach is my position as well.

“Everything played into my decision.”

Haastrup joins one of the top recruiting classes in the country. The aspiring doctor ranks as the On3 Industry’s No. 32 edge rusher and No. 296 prospect overall. The visit to Eugene pushed the Ducks over the top.

“I’d say their transparency and hospitality,” Haastrup said. “If you have to describe what making you feel at home is, Oregon definitely checked all the boxes.”
