Rutgers loves to mix it up in recruiting the state of Florida and Monday provided another victory.

Riverview (Fla.) Sumner defensive back Jamareis Conyers, also considering ACC programs North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest, elected to go the Big Ten route when he announced his verbal commitment.

“I’m going to Rutgers!” Conyers told Rivals. “They made it feel like a family and made me feel like I was wanted. I’ll be able to play, compete at a high level in the Big Ten.”

From Greg Schiano on down, the RU staff got involved in March with a scholarship offer sent Conyers’ way and an official visit was set up soon after.

That trip and time on campus helped to wrap up this recruitment.

“Coach (David) Rowe and Coach Murph (Larry Murphy Jr.), the corners coach and assistant corners coach — I talk to them every day,” Conyers said. “They’ve tried to get me up there real bad. I’ve got a great relationship with them.

“Coach Schiano knows what he’s looking for. Florida is different. Florida is the best football available.”

Rutgers now holds verbal commitments from 22 prospects in the class of 2026, with the latest being the third from the Sunshine State.

When reflecting on Piscataway and the overall impression of his future home, Conyers again reverted to the people.

“It’s a little different from the St. Pete/Tampa area,” he said. “A lot of resources, a lot of people that are really for you.”

Conyers’ recruitment is shut down

In addition to electing to make a decision before the start of the 2025 season, Conyers took his time and pushed back original commitment windows to be sure of his collegiate pick.

Now that the pledge is behind him, though, it should signal the official ending of the process.

“I’m done,” Conyers said. “Stress free now. It’s hard to pick a school, everybody wants you, but you’ve got to know what fits you best.”

The new Knight is going to potentially move around in the Rutgers secondary after he arrives for good next year.

“Just a long corner, being able to play inside and outside,” Conyers said. “Rotating to get on the field in any way possible.”
