Mcdonald (Pa.) Fort Cherry four-star safety Matt Sieg announced on National Signing Day that he has flipped his commitment from Penn State to West Virginia.

The Mountaineers beat out Virginia Tech, which has collected a majority of PSU’s former commitments since hiring James Franklin. Sieg is the second former Nittany Lion pledge to choose the Mountaineers, joining four-star interior offensive lineman Kevin Brown.

Sieg is the No. 184 overall prospect and No. 17 safety in the 2026 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 6 recruit in the Keystone State.

Last week, it looked like Sieg was also going to land with Franklin once again in Blacksburg, but Rich Rodriguez and the WVU staff have picked up some momentum on the trail and are poised to add a few big pieces to their 2026 class on NSD. Sieg is a humongous addition to the WVU class.

Likely to suit up as a safety at the next level, Sieg was a Swiss-Army knife at the high school level, playing quarterback and running the Fort Cherry offense. He becomes the second-highest-ranked commit in the WVU class, behind Brown, the No. 60 overall prospect and No. 2 IOL in the nation.

West Virginia entered Wednesday outside the top 30 in the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Look for it to finish inside the top 25 by the end of the day. The Mountaineers’ updated pledge list can be seen here.
