Kymistrii Young is a three-star wide receiver from Cardinal Mooney in Sarasota, Fla., who committed to Purdue early in June. That commitment remained firm until recently. Over the past month, another program has worked its way firmly into the picture — North Carolina.

The Tar Heels offered Young on Oct. 15, and that’s when everything started to shift.

“Since the offer, we’ve been talking a lot — almost every day,” Young told Rivals. “They kept telling me they wanted me on campus, and eventually I gave in. I wanted to go check it out for myself.”

Young made the trip to Chapel Hill this past weekend, and the visit turned into far more than he expected.

“It surprised me. I didn’t know what to expect, but everything impressed me. I saw the Duke game, which was a close one, and the atmosphere was great. The school has so much potential. I could see that. I just had a feeling it could be special. It all added up for me.

“I know where I want to be. I made my decision on Monday and have flipped my commitment to North Carolina.”

The people in Chapel Hill played a big role in Young’s decision

For Young, the Tar Heels’ appeal starts with the people inside the building.

“No. 1 is the coaching staff,” he said about his commitment. “The relationships with the coaches and the players all happened so fast and so easily. The academics are really good, and the staff gives off that small-town vibe. It is just a good overall feeling.”

Young said the time he spent around other recruits also played a major factor.

“The vibe in Chapel Hill was great. I spent a lot of time with the other recruits and bonded quickly. The staff was awesome, and I really like the offense as well. The people made a difference for me.”

Belichick and company made an impression

One of the most impactful moments of the visit came when Young sat down one-on-one with Bill Belichick for 45 minutes.

“We had a really good connection,” Young said. “He talked about the receivers he’s coached and produced over the years. He told me he likes my film and that he can see me playing inside or outside. He’s straight up — he doesn’t lie. He’s genuine.”

Young also spent extensive time with receivers coach Garrick McGee, who has both NFL an college experience.

“We sat down for two hours on the visit. He coached Justin Jefferson, and he coached in the NFL. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve talked to. He asked me great questions. He’s all about details, and I pay attention to that. It was a really good experience with him.”

The pedigree on the staff stood out to Young in a major way.

“That staff has so much experience. Most of them have coached in the NFL. You can’t ignore that. Those guys coached at where I want to go, so I believe in them.”
