Aggies now fifth in both polls

After thumping Mississippi State 31-9 Saturday night to move to 5-0, Texas A&M has moved back into elite territory in both the Associated Press and Coaches Polls.

The Aggies, who were already ranked fifth in the Coaches Poll, remained there this week. But A&M jumped Oklahoma, who beat Kent State 44-0, to move from sixth to fifth in the AP poll. It’s the latest the Aggies have been ranked in the top five since 2020, when they finished the season ranked fourth.

A&M offense, defense continue to climb national rankings

It wasn’t all that long ago — two games, in fact — that Texas A&M’s defense was ranked 66th in total defense, 72nd in rushing defense and 102nd in scoring defense. After holding Auburn to 10 points and Mississippi State to 9, things have changed considerably.

The Aggies are now ranked 21st nationally in total defense, 32nd in rushing defense and 48th in scoring defense. They’re also ranked sixth in sacks and ninth in tackles for loss. The passing defense isn’t shabby either, ranking 32nd as well.

Offensively, the Aggies have remained fairly steady, falling from 20th to 22nd in total offense. But the A&M rushing offense, which was ranked 74th two weeks ago, has cut that number in half and is now ranked 37th in the country. The Aggies are also sixth in the nation in yards per completion at 15.08 yards per catch.

Howell moves into the SEC lead in sacks

Texas A&M defensive end Cashius Howell, who had three sacks of Blake Shapen in the win over Mississippi State, now has 7 sacks on the season. That is more than defensive ends Nic Scourton and Shemar Stewart had combined last season. It is also two more sacks than the player in second place, Arkansas’ Quincy Rhodes Jr.

Howell is second in the nation in sacks, trailing only Nathan Voorhis of Ball State, who has 8.

Volleyball wins again, sweeping Alabama

Ninth-ranked Texas A&M’s women’s volleyball team continued its roll Sunday, sweeping past Alabama in Tuscaloosa to win its seventh straight match.

The Aggies took the match 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-18). Alabama jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first set before a 12-5 Aggie run gave the visitors a 15-13 advantage. They pressed on from there, winning 10 of the next 16 points to take the first set.

After the Aggies decisively won the second set, Alabama was able to stick around in the third, keeping the set tied up to 10-10. A&M then went on another run, finishing off the third set by winning 15 of the final 23 points.

Aggies in the NFL

Washington Commanders defensive end Von Miller had 3 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks as the Red…Commanders rallied from 10-0 deficit to beat the L.A. Chargers 27-10.

Houston Texans wide receiver Christian Kirk caught 4 passes for 64 yards, including a 47-yard bomb from quarterback CJ Stroud as the Texans routed the Baltimore Ravens 44-10.

Dallas Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson tallied 8 tackles as the Dallas beat the New York Jets 37-22. Wideout Josh Reynolds had 3 catches for 29 yards and defensive end Micheal Clemons had two tackles for the Jets.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson had a tackle in his first action of the season as the Bengals lost to the Detroit Lions 37-24.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett had 3 tackles as the Browns lost 21-17 to the Minnesota Vikings in a game held in London.

Carolina Panthers defensive end Nic Scourton had 2 tackles, including a tackle for loss, in a 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins. Running back Devon Achane caught 6 passes for 30 yards, including a spectacular touchdown reception, but could only manage 16 yards on 10 carries on the ground. Linebacker Tyrel Dodson also had 4 tackles for Miami.
