Aggies ranked someplace they haven’t been in a long time

After dismissing Florida 34-17 Saturday night and moving to 6-0 on the season, the Texas A&M football team is now ranked fourth in the nation in both the Coaches and AP Polls. The Aggies were jumped by Indiana, who beat then-No. 3 Oregon in Eugene, but A&M jumped Ole Miss, who scratched a 24-21 home win over 3-3 Washington State. This is the first time the Aggies have been in the top four in the polls during the regular season since 1995.

Aggie defense continues rapid rise in defensive metrics

It wasn’t very long ago that Texas A&M’s total defense was 77th nationally, with run defense 79th and scoring defense 103rd. But the defense has wiped out those memories in a hurry.

As of today, the Aggies are tops in the nation in third down defense percentage, allowing opponents to convert on less than 21% of their third down opportunities. Since SEC play began, opponents are 2 for 33 on third down conversions.

The Aggies are now ranked 20th in total defense, 22nd in rush defense, 39th in pass defense and have improved more than 60 spots in scoring defense, to 42nd (20.3 PPG). A&M is also fifth in sacks per game and eighth in tackles for loss per game.

Baseball beats TCU in exhibition play to end fall ball

The Texas A&M baseball team finished up their fall practice schedule with a 12-inning exhibition against TCU that finished with an 8-4 Aggie win.

Two positive signs from Aggies who were hurt last season: outfield Caden Sorrell homered in the first and added another hit later in the game, while DH Gavin Grahovac hit a double off the left field wall. Ben Royo, who started at shortstop, drove in 3 with a single and a bases loaded walk.

The A&M pitching staff struck out 11 Horned Frogs, with sophomore right-hander Aiden Sims striking out four in two scoreless innings. Ethan Darden, who transferred from Clemson over the summer, struck out a pair in two scoreless innings of work.

Vacherot takes Shanghai Masters title in all-Aggie affair

It was a family reunion in more ways than one in the Shanghai Masters this weekend, with cousins and former Texas A&M tennis players Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech playing for the title. Vacherot dropped the first set before rallying to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 for his first professional title.

Vacherot’s run to the championship defied all expectations, as he is the lowest-ranked tournament winner in ATP Masters 1000 history. His journey was no cakewalk, as he had to work his way through the qualifiers bracket to even be in the tournament itself. Then Vacherot took out the legendary Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the semifinals. Rinderknech didn’t have an easy trip to the finals either, as he drew — and defeated — 2021 U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev.

During their time in Aggieland, Vacherot and Rinderknech frequently played doubles together. Both also recognized their alma mater after their semifinal matches, writing “Gig ‘Em” with a marker on the on-court camera used by television.

Aggies in the NFL

Miami running back Devon Achane had what might be the best game of his professional career, racking up 128 yards and 2 touchdowns on 16 carries while adding another 22 yards on 4 catches. But that wasn’t enough as the L.A. Chargers rallied in the closing seconds to beat the Dolphins 29-27. Linebacker Tyrel Dodson did not play for the Dolphins after suffering a concussion last week.

New Indianapolis Colt Buddy Johnson had 3 tackles in a 31-27 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson, who was on the Cowboys’ practice squad, was signed two weeks ago.

Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Bobby Brown III had a pair of tackles as the Panthers rallied to beat Dallas 30-27. Safety Donovan Wilson had 6 tackles and 1 pass defensed for the Cowboys.

New York Jets wide receiver Josh Reynolds led the team with 3 catches for 25 yards as the Jets lost a painfully bad game to the Denver Broncos, 13-11 in London.

Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett had 2 tackles as the Browns lost 23-9 to Pittsburgh.

Green Bay linebacker Edgerrin Cooper led the Packers with 11 tackles, including 1 for loss, in a 27-18 win over Cincinnati.
