Key Takeaways

  • Diving into the numbers, the first thing that jumps off the page is that Houston nearly doubles what Oregon State has per game in the scoring department. The Beavers have played three pretty good defenses in Cal, Texas Tech, and Oregon, but 15.8 points per game is low.
  • On the flip side, despite against lesser competition, Houston’s defense is allowing just 9.7 points per game compared to 39 per game for the Beaver defense. The Beavers have played some teams with real offensive firepower this season, and will be looking to bring that number down this week.
  • Seeing Oregon State averaging just 70 rushing yards per game (131st out of 134) is just plain disappointing. A strong Beaver running game has been a staple of Beaver success this past handful of seasons, and it speaks to the struggles and overall offensive identity issues and inconsistencies plaguing them right now. Houston has allowed just over 100 yards per game, not quite as dominant as Tech, but better than Oregon, so it’ll be a challenge for the Beavers to get going on the ground.
  • Houston, meanwhile, has found what made Fritz so successful at his previous stops, and that’s a strong ground game, averaging just over 200 yards per game. The Beavers allow just over 180 per game, so they’ll need to be better at slowing down the run to have a shot at pulling the upset.
  • The number that also jumps out to me is Houston’s 187.3 passing yards per game, despite having a very capable QB in Conner Weigman. They haven’t had to throw a ton so far in their games this year, so that could be something to keep an eye on as well. The Beavers have allowed 284 yards per game through the air, so that may ultimatley benefit the Beaver defense.
  • The two squads are nearly even on third-down conversion rate, with Houston’s defense being slightly better against third-downs.
  • Houston is just 2-of-5 on fourth downs this season, while the Beavers are 4-for-6.
