BleedTechBlue.com caught up with Greg Zumach to get a breakdown of Louisiana Tech’s draftable players in 2025. Greg is an evaluator and writer who focuses on MLB, prospects, and especially the MLB Draft. He writes for The Baseball Tribune and Just Baseball. Below is Greg’s analysis and breakdown of RHP Logan Forsythe.
The Major League Baseball draft is fast approaching and it’s worth a look into how this week could affect fans of the Diamond Dogs. Before we look into the players, let’s examine the details about how the MLB Draft works to better understand where each player may slot in.
The baseball draft is unique from other sport drafts because it operates effectively as two separate phases. The first phase (the first 10 rounds) gives teams a set amount of money (bonus pool) they can spend. This bonus pool comprises the recommended signing bonus figures MLB provides for each assigned pick in the first 10 rounds. If a team doesn’t sign a pick, they lose the assigned value of that selection. There are some restrictions, but mostly, teams can move money around in those 10 rounds. Rounds 11-20 allow teams to spend up to $150k on each player and if they have any rollover money from the first 10 rounds, they can use that for any dollar over $150k on a player. They do not lose any money if they cannot sign a player in rounds 11-20. To move money around in the first 10 rounds, teams will often take several “senior signs” where older players in their last year of college eligibility sign for well below the assigned value for that selection. The team then can use that money on higher ceiling players near the top of the draft.
I reached out to scouts within the industry to ask which Diamond Dogs would be on the radar of MLB teams. They came to the same conclusion. Watch out for Logan Forsythe. Logan Forsythe: The Diamond Dogs landed an excellent transfer from Mississippi State in Logan Forsythe.
Standing 6’0”, Forsythe gets above average velocity from a frame that appears can add more down the line. The stuff is pro level, the command isn’t yet. He’ll show three pitches: 92-96 mph fastball, 83-85 mph curveball, 85 mph changeup. He spent most of the season in the bullpen before starting the final three games of the year. To me, that’s where I could see teams starting him out in professional ball. He’s not a likely long term starting pitcher, but it’s a profile of one who should “piggyback” with another starter in the low minors, meaning splitting time and logging 2-4 innings per outing. Asking around and it appears teams would look at him in the back half of the bonus pool rounds (7-10) or early in the post bonus pool rounds (11-20).
