Monday Morning Hype: Louisiana Tech vs #4 LSU

Louisiana Tech opened the season with a win over Southeastern and now sets its sights on a marquee matchup against No. 4 LSU this weekend in Baton Rouge.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM at Tiger Stadium. Fans can tune in to the action on KXKZ 107.5 FM or stream the game live on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.
Matchup at a Glance
Louisiana Tech opened the 2025 season in dominant fashion, blanking Southeastern 24-0 on Saturday night at Joe Aillet Stadium.
Quarterback Trey Kukuk was solid in his first career start, totaling 178 yards and accounting for one touchdown to lead the Bulldog offense.
Running back Clay Thevenin stood out among the skill players, rushing for 61 yards and a touchdown to help pace the ground game.
On the defensive side, the Bulldogs recorded their first shutout in a season opener since 1996. Luke Olson’s unit forced three turnovers and held the Lions to just 273 total yards in a stifling performance.
LSU kicked off its 2025 campaign with a statement win, taking down No. 4 Clemson 17-10 on the road Saturday night.
The Tigers from Baton Rouge dominated the second half, outscoring Clemson 14-0 to secure the top-five victory.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier led the offense with 230 passing yards and a touchdown, while sophomore running back Caden Durham added 74 yards on the ground and a score. Wide receiver Aaron Anderson also made his presence felt, hauling in six catches for 99 yards.
Defensively, Blake Baker’s unit turned in a stellar performance, holding Clemson to just 32 rushing yards on 19 attempts in a physical and disciplined showing.
Week One X-Factors: Two Questions That Matter
Can the ’Dogs make LSU sweat under the lights in Death Valley?
In each of the last two meetings between Louisiana Tech and LSU—in 2018 and 2009—the Bulldogs entered the fourth quarter within one score, with a real chance to pull off the upset.
This time around, the odds are significantly steeper. Tech enters Saturday’s matchup as a 37.5-point underdog—their largest spread since opening the 2014 season at No. 4 Oklahoma under the same odds.
With LSU coming off an emotional road win at No. 4 Clemson and a top-15 showdown with Florida looming next week, could this be the perfect trap game? We’ll see.
What kind of impact can Tech’s skill position players have in Baton Rouge?
Clay Thevenin emerged as Louisiana Tech’s top playmaker in Week One, racking up 61 yards on just six touches—averaging over 10 yards per touch.
Outside of Thevenin, however, the Bulldogs’ wide receivers and running backs combined for just 98 yards on 20 touches. Chalk it up to Week One jitters, or perhaps Tony Franklin still getting a feel for his personnel. Either way, it’s in the rearview now.
With a major step up in competition this week on the road at LSU, Tech’s skill players will need to rise to the occasion and showcase the talent this group has.
