Louisiana Lafayette @ Louisiana Tech

It’s finally here. The Cajuns and Bulldogs will clash for the first time since 2015. Both teams won close contests last week, with ULL defeating Arkansas State on a game-winning field goal and LA Tech holding off Army in a two-point victory. These are the rivalry games that made the expensive move to the SBC worth it. The SBC West appears to be wide open this season, and the winner of this game will not only make a statement within the state, but will emerge as a favorite within the conference.

Background

D’Wanye “Lunch” Winfield was given his nickname when, as a toddler, he ate his grandfather’s entire chicken wing while his grandfather momentarily looked away from his lunch. Lunch entered 2025 as the Cajuns’ 3rd string quarterback, but quickly was given his opportunity. Walker Howard was injured in the opener, and backup Daniel Beale struggled heavily in ULL’s first few games. With ULL staring down a 1-4 start, down 17 at the end of the 3rd quarter against Marshall, Lunch made his big impression. Winfield exploded late in the game, leading ULL to a shocking 54-51 win over the Thundering Herd.

This would not be the last time that Lunch proved to be resilient when the Cajuns’ backs were against the wall. A few weeks later, ULL sat at 2-6, in serious danger of missing a bowl game. Lunch led the Cajuns to 4 straight wins over rivals South Alabama, Texas State, Arkansas State, and ULM to push ULL into bowl mania.

In his first season as the opening day starter, Lunch has proven to be an invaluable star for Lafayette. Through 5 games, he has completed 76% of his passes for 844 passing yards, with 2 passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions. More notably, he is the team’s leading rusher with 69 carries for 364 yards and 7 rushing touchdowns.
