Discipline is proving to be DeShaun Foster‘s biggest problem with his UCLA squad this season. The Bruins were called for 13 penalties resulting in 116 yards lost. It is a problem that has come up throughout the first three games of the season.

Foster’s Bruins now sit at 0-3 following Friday’s 35-10 loss to New Mexico. The penalties are a problem on their own, but when they took place Friday proved to be costly. Many of the miscues came in critical moments.

Now, the Bruins will look to change course as they go into a bye week. For now, there are a lot more questions than answers for the UCLA head coach.

“It’s coming down to discipline and execution,” Foster said. “Not executing at a high level, and not making plays when we need to. We’re not at our best when our best is needed. You know, we got two weeks to fix this and just looking forward to this opportunity to get it fixed.”

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava said Friday that the onus falls on UCLA’s players. Foster said that ultimately responsibility falls on him as the head coach.

“Everything that happens can fall on me,” he said. “I’m the head coach, so it can fall on me. We don’t have to try to word things differently or whatnot. I’m the head coach. What I do know is that eventually this team is going to play with discipline. It’s gonna happen. It’s eventually gonna happen.”

Foster is an alum of the program and has spent years paying close attention to the Bruins. He admitted it is a low point for his alma mater.

“I’ve been around this program for a long time,” he said. “It’s just unfortunate what’s going on at this moment. Just not executing.”
