UCLA currently has the 132nd-ranked scoring offense among all FBS teams. There are only 134 FBS teams in college football. Things have not gone well on that side of the ball for the Bruins this season.

It is a big part of why UCLA is looking for a new head coach just a month as September comes to a close.

The Bruins are still searching for their first victory, and they host one of the top teams in the country this Saturday. Figuring out its own issues is just as important as slowing down Penn State, however.

Redshirt senior Hudson Habermehl is one of the veteran players on offense for the Bruins. The UCLA tight end feels simply being better at the fundamental elements at the game will help the offense get on track.

“I think part of it is some guys are overthinking things, including myself,” Habermehl said Tuesday after practice. “We just have to do our job, and it takes one out of 11 of us to each execute it at our highest level. So I think – and you hear it all the time, and I know I keep saying it – but execution is the biggest thing.

“And the way we do that is toning in to the snap count, blocking the person we need to block, run the right route. Be in the right area to give Nico the best chance to get the ball to us and execute.”

Challenge awaits UCLA this weekend

Penn State will head to Pasadena this week following its loss to Oregon. The Nittany Lions will present an uptick in competition for the Bruins.

“They’re big up front, they’re physical, and they’re in the right area,” Habermehl said. “So they don’t have too many mental errors. So we’ve just got to kind of capitalize on our opportunities when we get the ball in our hands and see how that goes.”
