On the way back from its blowout loss at second-ranked Indiana, the UCLA football team encountered travel delays that pushed back its usual Sunday team meeting.

But the Bruins are off this week before opening the final month of the regular season at home against Nebraska. Interim head coach Tim Skipper said Monday in his weekly Zoom conference call with the media that the focus will be on getting bodies healthy and returning to the style of play that spearheaded a three-game winning streak that was snapped this past weekend.

“The thing you take from it is, you know how the top teams in this country and in this conference play and you know how you need to play,” Skipper said. “So we need to figure out that we need to practice hard and we need to play hard and our style of play needs to be consistent all the time, and that would be the most disappointing thing is just our style of play wasn’t what it’s been. You didn’t see the strain, you didn’t see the fanatical effort, those type of things, and you’re going to need to play that way when you play these top teams like we just did.”

Time to heal

Running back Anthony Woods, who missed the game, did not travel with the team to Bloomington, Ind. Meanwhile, starting left guard Eugene Brooks was injured later in the week of preparation, forcing some last-minute adjustments against a strong Hoosiers pass rush that never came to fruition.

“A big week for those guys, just getting healthy, getting back right and doing all the rehab and everything they need to do to be able to help us once we get ready for game week next week,” Skipper said.
