Seemingly out of nowhere, Colorado has a quarterback competition on its hands. Head coach Deion Sanders put Ryan Staub into this past Saturday’s game against Delaware, looking pretty good. Now, the question arises of Staub potentially getting the start over Kaidon Salter on Friday night vs. Houston.

Reports indicated Staub would be the guy for Colorado. However, Sanders spoke against reporting on his team and a couple of days later, revealed his mind has been made up. We will not know that decision until Colorado’s offense takes the field, though.

“I know what I’m going to do,” Sanders said. “I’m not going to say it. I know exactly what I’m going to do. I’m pleased, I’m pleased with what I’ve seen this week in practice.”

Staub only threw 10 passes, completing seven of them. He could not have been more efficient, totalling 158 yards and two touchdowns. One score came just before halftime and another on the opening drive of the third quarter, extending Colorado’s lead to 17 points.

More than anything, Sanders remains impressed with the way Staub carries himself on the sideline. And not even when in the game as the quarterback. Sanders raved on about how engaged Staub is with his teammates, mainly during timeouts, with the goal of helping Colorado win. A big positive to help his case of getting back on the field.

“Not only did he take advantage of it, he was ready for it,” Sanders said. “He’s such a team guy… During timeouts, I’m often pacing because I’m talking to the coordinators or thinking or I’m facing the bench. I want to see how my players are reacting. I want to see who’s up, who’s playing around, who’s intent, who’s ready to play, who’s supporting one another. One thing about Staub, when those other guys are out there, he’s right there. He’s signaling in the plays and he’s right there to give them pointers and tips on what to do. He is in the game 100%.”

Maybe a sign of what is to come from Sanders. At the same time, Salter was signed out of the NCAA transfer portal for a reason. Colorado really likes true freshman JuJu Lewis too, believing he might be the program’s future. But the time to win is now, needing to start out Big 12 play with a win. Sanders holds a massive decision in the palm of his hand.
