In July, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders revealed he’d undergone a procedure to have a cancerous tumor in his bladder removed. After Colorado’s season-opening 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech on Friday, Sanders revealed how he physically felt during the game.

“Felt good, I don’t feel good right now, but I felt darn good during the game,” Sanders said. “We were playing a heck of a game and we could have played a little better, but I felt darn good. The staff was doing a great job. I mean, you’re two or three big plays, a first down deep ball — we’re right there.

“We don’t need passing interference. Another deep ball, we’re right there. We don’t need nonsense, and we allowed it to happen. Those are huge plays, like those plays come back to haunt you, but we’re going to get that correct and we’re going to fix it.”

While Sanders’ doctor confirmed he is cured of his cancer, he still faces residual effects from the disease. Notably, Sanders struggles to control his bladder. In turn, he struck a partnership with Depend, a company that produces absorbent, disposable undergarments for adults who battle incontinence.

On Friday, Sanders debuted his portable toilet that Depend provided him on the sideline. Unfortunately for Buffaloes fans, Sanders’ comeback story didn’t start with a win in the first chapter.

In the loss, Colorado’s defense was successful early, squeezing three turnovers out of Georgia Tech in just the first quarter. However, once the Yellow Jackets found their rhythm, Colorado struggled to stop them.

Georgia Tech finished the game with 463 yards of offense, compared to Colorado’s mere 305. Georgia Tech especially dominated in the ground game, racking up 320 rushing yards in the win. Deion Sanders knows his team must improve its defense if it hopes to have a successful season.

“I’m optimistic on everything. We’re definitely gonna be fine. I’m not concerned about that,” Sanders said. “We could have won that game. It’s not like we got our butts kicked, like we could have won that game. They ran the heck out of the ball. They did that. But we had opportunities.

“I’m pretty sure you guys are harping on the opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of. So if we take advantage of those opportunities, I have a whole different mood up here right now. So we got to get that fixed, and we will get that fixed.”
