Deion Sanders praises Ryan Staub mindset: ‘He sees the darn moment’

Heading into Colorado‘s 2025 season, the conversation around the quarterback position involved Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and incoming four-star freshman Julian Lewis. Just three weeks into the season however, redshirt sophomore three-star quarterback Ryan Staub has looked like the most polished arm of the trio.
All three players saw playing time in Colorado‘s 31-7 drumming of Delaware last Saturday, with Staub easily looking the most impressive. He completed 7/10 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, earning a boatload of praise from head coach Deion Sanders on Tuesday.
“He did what he was supposed to do,” Sanders said at Tuesday’s presser. “He did what he supposed to do. We did what we were supposed to do last week as a team. We need to do what we’re expected to do this week. Staub did what we expected him to do. You all are surprised. We weren’t. We’re thankful, appreciative and happy for him and elated for him. He sees the darn moment. We talk about the moment all the time in our meetings. We talk about taking advantage of opportunities not only on the football field, but in life. And he did that. He did that. I’m proud of him.”
Staub and Shedeur Sanders have conversed about his play
Staub has been with the program since 2023, backing up Shedeur Sanders for the past two seasons. Coach Prime also revealed that Staub and Shedeur have been in contact ahead of his reported first career start this weekend against Houston.
“He’s talked to (Shedeur Sanders) as well. He’s called him,” Sanders said. “They conversed. First of all, you gotta understand that Staub is a lovable dude. Everybody who’s played here previously have reached out to him and congratulated him. They did something to let them know how proud they are. He’s always been a stand-up guy, no matter who’s starting. He’s always been there in support. He’s not gonna be one of those guys where someone else is starting and he’s on the bench mad. He’s not built like that.”
“He’s gonna be there and support and make sure you’re prepared and make sure the scout team is prepared. He’s gonna give you everything he has when he gets the opportunity to practice. I think he was even giving signals last week. Going from giving signals to getting in the game, like c’mon man that doesn’t happen. This is a real life story happening right before your eyes. Hats off to him because he’s the ultimate teammate. Those are the type of guys we’re looking for.”
In his three years in Boulder, Staub has completed 30/54 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns. With disappointing play coming from Salter and Lewis early this season, it appears as if the signal caller will get a true chance to shine this weekend.
