Colorado has been a little shaky out of the gates this season, dropping games to Georgia Tech and Houston. Coach Deion Sanders has his work cut out for him if he hopes to continue on the upward trajectory he established two years ago.

The Buffaloes certainly had their ups and downs last week, but ultimately they came through with a 37-30 win over Wyoming. And Sanders took a different approach in the locker room and team meeting rooms in the days after the game.

“Instead of pointing out the lowlights, we uplifted the highlights,” Deion Sanders said on his weekly coaches show. “We showed plays that you were successful on. All week long they see after practice what they didn’t do the next day in front of the whole team. So you’ve got to live up to that, you’ve got to be accountable for that. But you want to show their good as well.”

That extra bit of positivity is designed to help grow some extra confidence. Feel confident, play confident.

Deion Sanders has clearly upgraded the talent in the program since he took over, but there have been some growing pains this year as the roster turned over and new guys entered key roles. Ideally, those pains start to go away right about now.

There have been a few games already. Time enough to iron out some kinks and start playing better football.

So the idea behind showing players positive clips of themselves is to reinforce the good habits. By contrasting that with the mistakes, players can hopefully identify quickly what areas need extra attention.

“You want to show that so you can lift them up and show them he’s not only doing bad, he’s doing good in some areas,” Sanders said. “Now where’s the disconnect? Let’s close the gap of good and bad. Let’s find some consistency on the good side.”

Deion Sanders has his work cut out for him the next few weeks. Each of the next three games will come against currently ranked opponents. He needs his guys up to speed quickly.

One more time, his message? It’s simple.

“I say, ‘I believe in you, now show me what I believe,'” he said. “I don’t want to just leave it right there. I believe in you, now show me what I believe because you’re here for a reason. Either we messed up or you’re going to prove us right.”
