Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele talks with reporters following his debut on Aug. 30, 2025.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was always going to have plenty of attention on his first start. By the end of the night Saturday, the freshman gained buzz from around the country for his performance. The left-hander from Hawaii shined in his collegiate debut against Oregon State.

He finished the night with three touchdown passes and 234 yards on a 20-for-30 performance. The freshman’s debut had eyes from across college football tuning into the matchup. It also earned him one of the top grades for a quarterback from PFF on Sunday.

Most importantly to Sagapolutele, the Bears earned a victory to open up Justin Wilcox’s ninth season 1-0.

Quick to credit those around him, Sagapolutele was appreciative of his supporting cast when speaking about his performance following the win in Corvallis.

“Once we got on that field, I just soaked it all in,” Sagapolutele said. “Got my first pass completed, and it was really just up from there. Once I took that first pass and Trond (Grizzell) came down with it, I just felt so confident that we were gonna keep rolling.”

The Bears had a couple dropped passes that would have given Sagapolutele even more yards on his total. However, he sees plenty of areas for improvement with himself and the offense heading into the second week of the season.

“I feel we left some points on the field,” he said. “There’s so much more to learn from this game. It was a great game, but there’s always so much more we can improve on.”
