Cal started off slow Saturday against Texas Southern but eventually found its rhythm in a 35-3 victory. The Bears needed some time to get their offense going but ultimately accounted for 459 yards. It was a rough start for standout freshman quarterback Jaron Sagapolutele in his second start.

The left-hander did not throw a touchdown pass but accounted for the first points of the day on a rushing score. The defense shined for the Bears and held the Tigers without a touchdown. It’s the first time the Cal defense has accomplished that feat since 2021.

Despite the positives in the victory, Justin Wilcox still saw plenty on the field that he wants to see improve next week.

“I think some guys were probably pressing a little bit,” Wilcox said. “Excited to play, and maybe trying to do a little bit too much. We can do a little better job focusing on the play that’s right in front of us and executing and executing that play better. I thought we played through that. It took longer than any of us would like.

“But, football doesn’t always go according to plan. It rarely goes according to plan. So, being able to play yourself out of some adversities where you’re not in rhythm and play into rhythm is part of it. I thought we learned some valuable lessons there. And, it picked back up especially in the second half.”
