What seems like an age-old moniker, Bobby Petrino‘s year two offense looks poised for a solid 2025 season. For that to come to fruition, it will require a jump from his starting quarterback.

Redshirt senior Taylen Green is back for his second season with the Razorbacks, and offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino said Tuesday the mental aspect of Green’s game is what has grown the most since last year.

“His knowledge of defenses is way better,” Petrino said. “So he understands, which allows you to make quicker decisions. His accuracy has really improved. His technique helps that. He’s an unbelievable coachable young man and he works hard at his technique and that’s helped him extremely. He knows the offense, too, so that makes it better. That makes everything work a little quicker.”

Petrino might be underselling it when he says Green’s accuracy has improved. The media is only able to see roughly 30 minutes of each practice, but one period that we do get to watch is the fastball period.

The fastball period typically begins at the start of each practice and is a four-play sequence by the first-, second- and third-teams. It’s meant to get the juices flowing and the players ready for practice.

Since the start of fall camp, Green has gone 14-of-17 in the fastball period, and before an incompletion on Tuesday had completed 10 in a row.

A big part of that growth comes because, as Petrino put it, he’s more comfortable than he was this time last year.

“He knows the offense, too, so that makes it better,” Petrino said. “That makes everything work a little quicker. It was a pretty big jump from the speed of Boise State to the speed of the SEC, so it took him a while to get used to that. Windows close like that, defensive ends are up the field like that, so I think you’ll see his maturity.”

Petrino and the Razorbacks will head out for Day 11 of fall camp on Wednesday morning. Be sure to stay tuned to HawgBeat for more coverage of Arkansas football.
