Georgia Tech picked up a signing day commitment on Wednesday when 3-star safety Chris Hewitt Jr. made the flip from the Rutgers after the GT coaching staff made a late push behind the scenes to get him in the 2026 class.

After the decision, JOL caught up with Hewitt’s head coach at Calvert Hall College High in Towson, Maryland, Ty Ward, to discuss his standout safety’s commitment, what kind of player Georgia Tech fans should expect, how his skills translate to the college level and more.

Here’s what he had to say:

How excited are you for Chris to make his commitment to Georgia Tech so he knows his future plans and can have all the stress of the recruiting process off him now?

WARD: “I love the GT fit for him. We talked about it being a 40-year decision, not just a four-year decision. Obviously we all want to play high-level football, which GT has become, but I also want my kids to go to schools that will set them up for success after football. And academically GT is a great spot, and I look forward to seeing him succeed down in Atlanta.”

What do you think about how Tech recruited Chris or what makes Tech the right fit for him?

WARD: “I think they are the perfect fit of athletics and academics much like Calvert Hall. I love schools that show they can be well rounded and elite in all things, and that is what GT offers.”

What should Georgia Tech fans expect from Chris as a player, a competitor and a person for those that might not have seen him play or know about him yet?

WARD: “He has a fire about him. He has contagious energy that his peers will feed off of. He is a good mix of speed, power and grace. This gives him great versatility on the field. He is also a coach’s son so football IQ and learning the game comes naturally to him.”

What do you feel about Chris’s skillset and mindset translates well to the college level and do you see him being an impact player early on at Georgia Tech once he gets there?

WARD: “He is a special athlete and driven for success. I feel in the right situation he can easily make an early impact. He is not above anything so I would expect him at least to work his way into some special teams roles early on.”
