GT picks up QB commitment from Cole Bergeron
It was unclear if Georgia Tech would sign a quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class, but that question got its answer on the final day of the early signing period as the Jackets snagged a surprise commitment from 3-star QB Cole Bergeron.
“Great school and a great program led by good people,” Bergeron told JOL on Friday following his decision. “The stability of Coach (Brent) Key (was important as well).”
“I’m fired up,” added Bergeron. “Coach Key has got it headed in the right direction, and I want to do my part to help the team in any way.”
Weinke’s persistence in recruiting Bergeron pays off
Bergeron, a St. Thomas More (La.) standout, was a Jackets’ target this past spring and and officially visited Georgia Tech in June before committing to Virginia Tech in August. After the coaching change and the Hokies going after other players at the position over the last couple months, Bergeron decommitted from Virginia Tech in the past few weeks.
Bergeron said the consistency Georgia Tech quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke had in his recruitment was a big factor in the Louisiana gunslinger ultimately picking the Jackets.
“Coach (Weinke) never stopped recruiting me. He’s been to my campus, spoke to my coaches, watched me throw, and he’s stayed in touch throughout the whole process,” said Bergeron. “He knows my strengths and weaknesses, and I am ready to get to work with him.”
Bergeron will never stop working to improve
Several schools then got back in the mix for Bergeron, including a strong push from Arkansas and Minnesota in the last few days, but Georgia Tech was able to win the recruiting battle in the end after establishing the early relationship in his recruitment led by Weinke. Bergeron said he’s blessed and excited for the opportunity but nowhere near done working to get better at his craft.
“I’ve been blessed with physical tools, but I take nothing for granted,” said Bergeron. “I will put in the work.”
Bergeron had offers from Minnesota, Indiana, UCLA and Colorado, among others.
