Michigan men’s basketball coach Dusty May will earn a significant pay increase under a newly finalized contract extension that elevates him into the upper tier of the nation’s highest-paid coaches.

According to contract details obtained by The Detroit News through a Freedom of Information Act request, May’s new five-year deal raises his average annual salary from $3.825 million to $5.1 million. The agreement, which extends through the 2029-30 season, was officially signed in July by May, athletic director Warde Manuel and interim university president Domenico Grasso.

The extension adds one year to the original contract May signed when he was hired in March 2024. Though the deal was announced by Michigan on Feb. 21, it wasn’t finalized until this month.

Under the new terms, May will receive $4.6 million in base pay for the 2024-25 season, with his compensation increasing by $250,000 annually. His salary will peak at $5.6 million in the final year of the contract. The total value of the deal before bonuses is $25.5 million.

The 48-year-old coach, who was hired after a successful run at Florida Atlantic, is entering his second season in Ann Arbor. The raise reflects Michigan’s commitment to long-term stability in the program and confidence in May’s leadership.
