It was a huge week of college hockey for the state of Michigan, as No. 1 versus No. 3 in the rankings faced off this week as bitter in-state rivals, Michigan and Michigan State, didn’t disappoint with action.

Let’s take a look at how the Wolverines fared this week:

December 5

Highlights:

Who: Michigan State

Where: East Lansing, MI

Result: Michigan wins 3-0

Goals: Spence, Malcolm (1); Park, Aidan (1); Perron, Jayden (1)

Goalie: Jack Ivankovich

Of Note: Freshman goaltender Jack Ivankovich was stellar for the Wolverines, earning another shutout by stopping all 23 shots he saw during the night to give the Wolverines a big win over the Spartans in enemy territory.

Decembr 6

Highlights:

Who: Michigan State

Where: Ann Arbor, MI

Result: Michigan loses 3-1

Goals: Horcoff, Will (1)

Goalie: Jack Ivankovich

Of Note: Despite taking a 1-0 lead into the second period thanks to another goal by Will Horcoff, the wheels fell off for the Wolverines in the second and third periods as it couldn’t recreate Friday night’s magic in East Lansing. MSU would tie the game with around a minute left in the second period and scored to take the lead in the opening minutes of the third period. Despite pushing for an equalizer, the Spartans would end up scoring an empty-netter to earn the series split.

The hockey team now enters the winter break and will not play any games for the rest of the month. The program returns to the ice on January 3 in an exhibition against the United States National Team Development Program’s U-18 team in Ann Arbor. The game will be available to stream on B1G+ with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
