The University of Michigan will raise Trey Burke’s No. 3 jersey to the Crisler Center rafters on Jan. 23 when the Wolverines host rival Ohio State, the program announced Friday.

Burke, the 2013 consensus National Player of the Year and one of the most decorated players in school history, will become just the sixth Michigan player to receive the honor. He joins Cazzie Russell, Rudy Tomjanovich, Phil Hubbard, Glen Rice, and Bill Buntin, though Russell’s No. 33 remains the only number officially retired by the program.

“Michigan men’s basketball is thrilled to recognize Trey’s incredible impact on our program by raising his No. 3 jersey to the Crisler rafters,” Michigan head coach Dusty May said in the university’s release. “Trey’s two years in Ann Arbor left an undeniable mark, and he remains one of the greatest Wolverines to ever wear the jersey.”

A Columbus, Ohio, native, Burke starred in Ann Arbor from 2011-13, starting all 73 games of his career. He averaged 16.9 points, 5.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds while leading Michigan to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. His sophomore year was among the best individual seasons in program history — 18.6 points, 6.7 assists and a school-record 260 assists — capped by a trip to the 2013 national championship game.

That season, Burke swept the nation’s top individual honors, winning the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Bob Cousy Award, and was named National Player of the Year by the Associated Press, NABC, and USBWA. He became Michigan’s first consensus National Player of the Year and earned consensus first-team All-America honors.

Burke went on to be selected ninth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, traded on draft night to the Utah Jazz, and played 10 seasons in the league with Utah, Washington, New York, Dallas and Philadelphia. He earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2014 and played more than 500 career NBA games, averaging 10.6 points and 3.3 assists. Among his highlights were 28 career 20-point games and a 40-point outburst with the Knicks in 2018.

After his NBA career, Burke signed with top European clubs, first Italy’s Pallacanestro Reggiana in 2023 and then Turkey’s Bursaspor in 2024. He has also represented the United States in international settings.

The Jan. 23 ceremony will also serve as a celebration for fans. According to Michigan’s release, the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a replica No. 3 jersey banner.

Tickets for the 2025-26 season go on sale this fall, with single-game sales opening Oct. 7 for season ticket holders and donors and Oct. 8 for the general public.

Burke’s jersey will forever hang in Crisler alongside Michigan’s all-time greats — a fitting tribute for the point guard whose clutch shot-making and leadership helped restore the program’s national prominence.
