Moore names Poggi interim coach for Central Michigan, Nebraska games

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore announced Monday that associate head coach Biff Poggi will serve as interim head coach for the Wolverines’ next two games while Moore serves a suspension.

Moore, in his second season leading the program, will be sidelined for Saturday’s home game against Central Michigan and the following week’s road trip to Nebraska. He confirmed that he will be permitted to be around the team during the week and up until kickoff against the Chippewas, but will then be unavailable until after the Nebraska game.

Poggi, who returned to Michigan’s staff this offseason after two years as head coach at Charlotte, has long been a trusted voice within the program. Known for his strong leadership and player-first mentality, he has previously overseen key aspects of the Wolverines’ preparation and game-day management.

Michigan (1-1) enters the two-game stretch looking to rebound from a loss at Oklahoma. The Wolverines will rely on Poggi’s guidance on the sideline while Moore remains connected to the program in practices and meetings during the week.

The temporary shift comes at a pivotal point in the season, as Michigan looks to establish rhythm with freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood and a reshaped offensive line, while also maintaining defensive consistency.

The Wolverines host Central Michigan on Saturday at Michigan Stadium before traveling to Lincoln on Sept. 21 to face Nebraska. Moore will be eligible to return to the team for its bye week and will return to the sideline when Michigan hosts Wisconsin on Oct. 4.
