The week that was in Mizzou sports: Oct. 13-19

With football taking up so much space, it’s easy to miss other things going on in Mizzou sports.
Here is a recap of what we didn’t cover last week.
Volleyball
The Tigers opened the week with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 sweep of Ole Miss on Friday.
Caylen Alexander led Mizzou with 15 kills, while freshman Paige Felder had five kills. Marina Crownover posted 33 assists and eight digs. Freshman Zoey Matias had 14 digs and two aces.
The Tigers then beat LSU 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 25-19 on Sunday.
Mizzou was trailing 20-11 in the third set before rattling off eight consecutive points and eventually tying the set at 24. The Black & Gold then fell behind 25-24 before rallying for three consecutive points.
Janet deMarrais led Mizzou with 17 kills to go with four digs, while Caylen Alexander matched her with 17 kills.
Tyrah Ariail had 10 kills and seven blocks, while Maya Sands recorded 16 digs and freshman Zoey Matias-Lopez had 12. Sands added four aces and three assists.
Freshman Nina Mandovic had 22 assists and a career-high six blocks.
The consecutive wins ended a two-game losing stretch for Mizzou and got the Tigers back to .500 in SEC play at 12-7 overall and 4-4 in conference.
Mizzou will step out of conference play for a day to take on SEMO on the road Wednesday night, then will return home to host South Carolina on Friday and Georgia on Sunday.
Soccer
The Tigers opened the week with a 2-1 loss to Texas A&M on Thursday. It was Mizzou’s seventh consecutive loss since winning its SEC opener.
The Aggies took the lead with a goal at the 3:00 mark, but Mizzou tied it with an Olivia Chianelli goal on a penalty kick with 44:58 on the clock. It was the Tigers’ first goal since scoring three against Texas on Sept. 12.
Texas A&M scored the winner with 72:03 on the clock.
The teams tied with 13 shots and both crews had eight attempts on goal.
Kate Phillips had six saves for Mizzou.
The Tigers broke their losing streak with a 0-0 tie against No. 11 Arkansas on Sunday.
The Razorbacks outshot Mizzou 13-6 overall and 5-0 on goal.
Riley Wilkerson made five saves to net the shutout.
The regular season will come to an end Sunday when Mizzou (4-10-2, 1-7-1 SEC) hosts Auburn at 2 p.m.
Cross Country
The Tigers hosted the Pre-National Invitational on Friday at Gans Creek and placed third in the women’s 6-kilometer run and second in the men’s 8-kilometer run.
BYU won the women’s race with 25 points, while Villanova took second at 170 and Mizzou placed third with 216.
Monica Wanjiku took the top spot for the Tigers, placing ninth overall with a time of 19:47.9. Rahel Broemmel was next for Mizzou, taking 43rd in 20:31.4, while Mirriam Chepkirui was close behind at 20:32.3 for 45th.
Kobi Walker was next with a time of 20:34.6 for 51st overall.
Allison Newman took 78th for Missouri in 20:53.8, while Charlotte Cullen took 81st in 20:55.1. Natalie Barnard finished 126th in 21:16.7 and Elissa Barnard took 200th in 21:55.5. Maleah Eggera finished 230th in 22:07.3, Pheline Cheruto took 246th in 22:15.0, Lily Ginsberg finished 336th in 24:50.5 and Suzy Lecoutre did not finish.
The race had 339 total finishers.
Georgia won the men’s race with 119 points, while Mizzou ended at 164 for second.
Drew Rogers was the first Tiger finisher in 23:24.7 for 12th, while Elijah Limo was close behind at 23:25.8 for 14th.
Tyler Freiner took 36th in 23:58.0 and Austin Popplewell took 46th in 24:03.9.
Ryder James placed 61st in 24:16.2, and Joshua Allison claimed 106th in 24:48.7.
Raymond Kipkoech ran a time of 24:54.5 for 117th, Carter Spradling crossed the finish line in 25:19.9 for 163rd and Louie Endrea took 257th in 27:45.5.
There were 268 finishers in the men’s race.
The SEC Championships will be the next competition for the Tigers on Oct. 31.
Tennis
The Tigers went to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional Championship on Thursday through Saturday.
In singles, Zoe Lazar beat Arkansas State’s Hanmare McAslin 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in the round of 64, but lost to Kansas State’s Martaa Chogsomjav 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 32.
Gian Octa beat Tulsa’s Uta Asakura 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 64, then beat Minnesota’s Anlin Xie 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 32. Her round of 16 match with Memphis’ Natalia Koppova has not been scheduled.
Julia Bedard lost her round of 64 match to Tulsa’s Carolina Alonso, 4-6, 3-6.
Alex Ackman won her round of 64 match against Nebraska’s Yuzu Miyoshi, 6-3, 6-3. Then Ackman lost to Arkansas State’s Carla Muro Castellvi 4-6, 6-2, 4-6.
In the main singles draw, Octa lost to Arkansas’ Katarina Pavlechova 4-6, 2-6 in the round of 64.
Mary Brumfield won her round of 64 match against Nebraska’s Natalia Trigosso 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), then lost to Oklahoma’s Chloe Noel 3-6, 2-6.
Korinao Roso beat Arkansas’ Anet Koskel 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) in the round of 64 and Kansas State’s Chogsomjav 6-4, 6-4. In the round of 16, Roso lost to Kansas’ Heike Janse Van Vuuren 1-6, 4-6.
Michelle Kleynerman lost her round of 64 match to Oklahoma’s Gloriana Nahum 3-6, 4-6.
In doubles, Octa and Ackman lost in the round of 64 to North Dakota’s Andrea Pineda and Alva Norbert 6-8.
Zoe Lazar and Roso teamed for an 8-6 win against Wichita State’s Anne Knuettel and Vichitraporn and Anne Knuettel in the round of 64, then beat Missouri State’s Matilde Ercoli and Raluca Puscas 8-4 in the round of 32. They then lost to Nebraska’s Emma Rizzetto and Conley Raidt 6-8 in the round of 16.
Brumfield and Andrea Artimedi beat Drake’s Jana Ruzic and Elizabete Klavinska 8-2 in the round of 64, then beat Kansas’ Sandugash Kenzhibayeva and Meg McCarty 8-4 in the round of 32. They lost to Oklahoma’s Salakthip Ounmang and Mika Buchnik 4-8 in the round of 16.
Michelle Kleynerman and Julie Bedard beat Memphis’ Alicia Mall and Natalia Koppova 8-7 (7-5) in the round of 64, but lost to Wichita State’s Giorgia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang 5-8 in the round of 32.
Swim & Dive
The Tigers opened the season with a 192-108 loss to Purdue in the men’s competition and 184-116 in the women’s competition.
Newcomers Quinlan Gould and Libby Bakker won in their first meet for the Tigers. Gould claimed the men’s 100-meter backstroke with a time of 47.22. Bakker, a freshman, won the women’s 200-meter backstroke in 1:59.06.
Line Bank took three golds. She won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:02.14, the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.39 and the 200-meter medley relay with a split of 27.41 seconds.
Jan Zubik won a pair of races. First, the men’s 100-meter fly in 46.65 then the 200-meter individual medley in 1:47.07.
Collier Dyer won the 1-meter dive with a score of 364.58. Matthew Judkins won the 200-meter fly in 1:45.75 to earn his first career win.
Mizzou will host Vanderbilt on Nov. 1.
Softball
The Tigers finished the fall ball schedule with a matchup against Washington (Mo.). It was originally scheduled for a Saturday doubleheader, but weather led to a single game.
Men’s Golf
The TIgers went to the Moraine Intercollegiate in Ohio on Monday and Tuesday and took third out of 14 teams.
Mizzou jumped out to a huge lead with a -15 as a team in Round 1, but that success dropped off quickly as the Tigers shot -6 in Round 2 and +5 in Round 3. The Tigers fell from first to third in the final round as Xavier shot -3 to end at -20 as a team and Illinois shot -2 to end at -17.
Mizzou shot -16 overall.
Veikka Viskari led Mizzou at -6 after shooting 62-72-73–207 to tie for seventh overall. Trent Mierl matched him after shooting 69-68-70–207.
Bradley Mulder dropped from second to a tie for 13th in the third round. He opened with rounds of 66 and 69, but shot 74 to end at -4 209.
Virgilio Paz shot +2 with totals of 72-70-73–215. He tied for 38th.
Rees Roberts climbed six spots in the third round to tie for 55th after shooting 76-71-73–218 for 7-over.
