The week that was in Mizzou sports: Sept. 29-Oct. 5

Even though there was no football last week, it’s easy to miss all the Mizzou sports going on. Here is a look at everything we didn’t cover.
Volleyball
The Tigers opened the week with a sweep of Arkansas, 25-11, 25-20, 25-17, at the Hearnes Center on Friday.
It was the Tigers’ SEC home opener, and broke a two-game losing streak that opened conference play.
Caylen Alexander led the Tigers with 16 kills, while Janet deMarrais had 11 and Tyrah Ariail totaled seven block assists and nine kills. Maya Sands led the Tigers with 17 digs to go with eight assists.
Mizzou now leads the Battle Line Rivalry series 17-6 and the Tigers are 7-3 in their past 10 matchups with the Razorbacks.
The Tigers then matched up with Oklahoma on Sunday and were on the verge of a second sweep after opening the match with a 30-28 set win and following that with a 25-21 set win. But Oklahoma rebounded, winning the final three sets 25-20, 25-21, 15-9 to take a 3-2 match win.
Alexander led the Tigers with 18 kills and added nine digs, while Ariail had four blocks, while Sands had 16 digs and five assists.
Mizzou coach Dawn Sullivan is 11-4 in five-set matches with the Tigers, but Missouri is just 1-2 in them this year.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in SEC play.
Missouri will play at Florida on Friday and at Auburn on Sunday.
Soccer
The Tigers opened the week with a 1-0 loss at LSU on Thursday.
Morgan Witz scored the goal for LSU.
The Bayou Bengals led the game 17-6 in total shots and 7-2 in shots on goal.
Kate Phillips made six saves in net for Mizzou.
The Tigers returned home to host Alabama on Sunday and lost 3-0.
Alabama scored twice in the first 7 minutes, then again in the 86th minute.
The Crimson Tide led 10-6 in total shots, but the teams tied with five shots on goal each.
Phillips made three saves for Mizzou in goal.
Missouri (4-8-1, 1-5 SEC) will try to break its five-game losing streak when it plays at Vanderbilt on Friday. That will be the lone game this week.
Men’s Golf
The Tigers went to the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Arkansas from Monday through Wednesday, placing sixth out of 10 teams. The Tigers shot 306-295-306–907 for 43-over.
Junior Veikka Viskari finished 11th, his third top-15 finish to start the season. He shot 76-72-74–222 for 6-over.
“The Blessings is a great test and a true championship setup,” Mizzou coach Glen Millican said. “It definitely challenged us but our guys played hard. They showed great composure and competitiveness under difficult conditions.”
Senior Virgilio Paz was second for the Tigers and 22nd overall at 74-73-79–226 for 10-over.
Freshman Trent Mierl shot 81-75-75–231 for 15-over and 33rd overall. Bradley Mulder shot 77-78-78–233 for 17-over and 34th overall, while Reese Roberts shot 79-75-79 for 16-over and 36th overall.
The Tigers will be off for a week before heading to Ohio for the Moraine Intercollegiate on Oct. 13 & 14.
Women’s Golf
The Tigers went to the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Arkansas from Monday through Wednesday and took seventh out of 10 teams. The Tigers shot +59 at 311-309-303–923.
Fleur van Beek led the Tigers with an 11th-place finish. She shot 80-74-71–225 for 9-over. She rose 10 spots on the final day with her 1-under 71.
Addie Dobson was second for the Tigers, taking 13th at 10-over. She shot 76-70-80–226.
Alexandra Berglund tied for 17th at 12-over, 80-74-74–228, but competed as an independent and did not count toward the Tigers’ team score.
Ebba Liljeberg was third for the Tigers and tied for 30th overall at 18-over. She shot 78-81-75–234.
Melanie Walker took 42nd at 23-over, shooting 77-84-78–239, while Addie Surber took 55th at 34-over, shooting 81-90-79–250.
The Tigers are currently finishing up the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Showdown in Kansas after playing the first round yesterday.
Softball
The Tigers hosted the Border War on Saturday in fall ball, then played at Illinois on Sunday.
Stats were not recorded for either, as they aren’t throughout fall ball.
Mizzou will host three fall ball games this week. The Tigers will play SIUE on Friday, then a doubleheader against Washington (Mo.) and Kansas City on Saturday.
Friday’s game will start at 6 p.m., Saturday’s will be at 2:30 and 5 p.m.
There will be just two more fall ball games after this week, both on Oct. 25.
Baseball
The Tigers hosted Central Methodist on Wednesday, then played at Iowa on Saturday in fall ball action.
No stats were recorded against Central Methodist, but our coworkers over at Hawkeye Report kept numbers on the game at Iowa. The Tigers lost 15-7 in 18 innings.
