Trent Burns to make Mizzou debut, Jayden Stone out for 3-4 weeks
A source within the Mizzou basketball program has told MizzouToday there are two major updates on Mizzou basketball injuries ahead of the Tigers’ matchup with South Carolina State.
Trent Burns
Barring a setback in warm ups, Tiger center Trent Burns will make his Mizzou debut Tuesday night.
Burns, a 7-foot-5, 260-pound redshirt freshman, missed his entire freshman season with a foot injury. Then during summer practice getting ready for his redshirt junior season, Burns suffered a similar injury. The team referred to it as a “Stress reaction” and he had a medical procedure to repair the damage.
Burns has been on a return-to-play timeline since the procedure. And he will make his Mizzou debut against South Carolina State on a minutes restriction.
Burns was a four-star prospect in the class of 2024 who Mizzou coaches have referred to as a “Unicorn” for his mixture of size, ball handling and shooting ability.
Don’t expect to see him throughout the game. But the team expects him to play.
Jayden Stone
The source also said Mizzou guard Jayden Stone injured his left hand at practice Monday. He will be out 3-4 weeks.
Stone has been a major plus for the Tiger offense early in the season after missing all of last season at West Virginia with a head injury.
Stone is averaging 13.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in a bench role for Mizzou through the first six games.
“Jayden has had a tremendous start to his first season at Mizzou,” Missouri coach Dennis Gates said in a team statement. “After missing last season with an. injury, it was great to see him back to being himself and such a strong contributor to our early season success. This is just a small bump in the road, though, and we look forward to him getting back on the court before SEC play begins.”
The timeline at eight three or four weeks would put Stone’s return at the Braggin’ Rights matchup with Illinois on Dec. 22.
