Players to know
Cade Tyson, Guard/Forward
After spending two seasons at Belmont to start his career, Cade Tyson went to North Carolina last season and appeared in 31 games. But he hit the portal once again in the offseason and joined new head coach Nike Medved in Minnesota.
The 6-foot-7, 195-pound senior has been the focal point of the Golden Gopher offense through the first two games. He averages 28.5 minutes per game and is the lone Minnesota player with more than 20 total field goal attempts and more than 10 3-point attempts. Tyson is also the lone Golden Gopher with more than 20 free-throw attempts.
He is shooting 61.9/45.5/87.0 so far this season for an average of 25.5 points per contest to go with 4.5 rebounds per game.
This will be the first time he faces a power-conference opponent as the primary scoring option. But through two games, he’s been the guy to worry about most.
Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, Forward
After starting his career at Arkansas-Little Rock, Jaylen Crocker Johnson joined Medved at Colorado State last season and was a regular starter.
He followed his coach to Minnesota in the offseason and the 6-8, 240-pound junior has been one of the key Golden Gophers through two games.
He leads the team in shot attempts with 24, though he’s made just seven attempts. And he is second on the team with 16 free-throw attempts. He has made 13 for an 81.3 percent mark at the stripe.
But the really impressive mark is his 30 total rebounds through three games.
He is averaging 14.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game and should continue to get opportunities on offense, especially if he keeps hitting from the free-throw line at a high rate.
