What to know/How to watch: Mizzou vs. Alabama

After the bye, the No. 14 Missouri Tigers return to the field to take on the No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide. Here are some basics to know about the game between Mizzou and Bama.

Players to know
Offense
- Ty Simpson, QB
The redshirt junior has burst onto the scene in his first chance as a regular starter. Standing at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, Simpson hasn’t thrown for less than 226 yards in a game and has just one interception this season, which came last week against Vanderbilt.
He’s 111-of-158 (70.3 percent) passing for the season with an SEC-leading 1,478 yards along with 13 touchdowns, which is tied for second in the conference.
He’s not much of a rushing thread, totaling just 51 yards on 30 attempts this season, including -6 yards last week against Vanderbilt. But he’s not immobile, totaling 25 yards against Wisconsin and running in two touchdowns.
- Germie Bernard, WR
The 6-1, 204-pound senior is Alabama’s leading receiver with 25 catches for 392 yards and five touchdowns this season. That puts him tied for eighth in the conference in catches, fifth in yards (just ahead of Kevin Coleman with 386), and tied for second in touchdowns.
His best game came Week 1 against Florida State, when Bernard brought in eight catches for 146 yards. After that, he was held to less than 70 yards in three consecutive weeks, but had five catches for 82 yards and a score last week.
He’s not a massive deep threat, with a long of 43 yards this season, but only one other game with a catch of more than 30 yards.
Bernard led the Tide in receiving last year at 50 catches for 794 yards and had five catches for 82 yards against Missouri last season.
- Ryan Williams, WR
After a breakout true freshman season, the 6-0, 178-pound sophomore has been dynamic once again as a sophomore. Williams has posted 21 catches for 336 yards and three touchdowns in four games played. He did not play in the Tide’s game against ULM in Week 2.
His best game was a five-catch, 165-yard performance against Wisconsin where he scored two touchdowns. Last week, he added six catches for 98 yards and a score.
He’s been the deep threat, with a 75-yard catch against Wisconsin and a 54-yard reception last week.
Williams posted 48 catches last season for a team-high 865 yards and eight touchdowns after exploding onto the scene at just 17 years old.
Defense
- Justin Jefferson, LB
No, not that Justin Jefferson. But this one is a 6-1, 227-pound redshirt senior linebacker who has been with the Tide for three years. Last year, he recorded 60 tackles with 6.5 for loss and two sacks.
This year, he’s posted a team-high 35 tackles with 1.5 for loss and a sack. His sack came last week against Vanderbilt, as did his one forced fumble.
He intercepted a pass against ULM and broke up another pass that week, while also posting a quarterback hit.
- LT Overton, DL
The Crimson Tide have a well-spread defense when it comes to tackles for loss and sacks.
But 6-5, 278-pound senior lineman Overton has a co-team high 3.5 tackles for loss and a co-team high 1.5 sacks. He’s posted 16 total tackles to go with two QB hits.
He had at least half of a tackle for loss in each of the first four weeks and posted a full sack against Wisconsin and half a sack against Georgia.
- Bray Hubbard, DB
Hubbard, a 6-2, 213-pound junior defensive back, leads the Tide with two interceptions. He has posted 25 total tackles, including 1.5 for loss. He’s also broken up one pass, added one quarterback hit and forced one fumble.
His two interceptions both came against Wisconsin, while the forced fumble was against Georgia.
He had nine total tackles against Georgia, including half a tackle for loss and a pass breakup.
